How much does learning to drive cost

This is a difficult question because the cost of learning to drive can depend on a variety of factors, how much driving experience you already have, how much private practice you do and making sure you choose the right Driving School. As a rough guide we’ve found that if you multiply your age by 2 would equate to the number of hours required.

What makes of car do you use for Driving Lessons

Do we offer crash courses.

We can offer what we prefer to call a condensed course – these would normally be six to eight hours per week over a number of weeks. Our Driving Instructors work with you to create a tailored course.

Can I have lessons in my own car.

Your first lesson will be in one of our School cars so that your instructor can assess your ability. The instructor will then decide if you can drive your own car in your lessons. Remember that our car’s dual controls make it much safer. You would need to ensure you have the appropriate insurance in place and be able to produce the policy to your driving instructor if future driving lessons were to take place in your own car.

Can I be picked up and dropped off in different areas

You can arrange this with your Driving Instructor after you have had your first lesson. It’s quite common to collect you from college and drop you after your Driving Lesson at home.

Can I have evening and weekend Driving Lessons.

Yes. Most of our instructors do offer lessons in the evening and at weekends, although these are the most popular times and tend to get booked up far in advance.

Can my Parents, Partner or Friends teach me to Drive

Yes, but there are a few conditions. 1. They must be at least 21 years of age. 2. They must have had a full clean driving license for 3 years or more. 3. You must display ‘learner’ plates front and rear. 4. You must have an internal mirror. 5. You must have the appropriate insurance in place.

What happens if I don’t get on with my Driving Instructor.

It is really important that you get on with your instructor, so if you decide that you would like to change your instructor, we can arrange a new one for you.

Practical and theory tests

How do I book a Practical Driving Test

You can book your practical test online or over the phone on 0870 0101 372. However you need to have passed your theory test before you book your practical test.

What questions are asked during a Practical Driving Test ?

In the practical test, you will be asked two ’show and tell’ questions about safety and maintenance checks on your car. Getting one or both of them wrong will count as a driving fault in your test.
To help prepare, we have prepared a ‘show me tell me’ page

Is it possible to use one of your cars for the practical test if I take lessons with you.

You certainly can use one our cars for your practical test. What normally happens is that you have a short driving lesson just before your practical test and then drive to your test centre. Your driving instructor will generally wait in the centre while you have your test in the car.

How long is a theory pass valid

Your theory test result is valid for two years. If you haven’t passed your practical test within that two-year period, you will need to sit your theory test again.

On the road

Do you press the clutch before you brake when you want to stop.

No when braking, you should always press the brake before the clutch to avoid coasting

Is it necessary to indicate when passing a cyclist or a parked car on a street when another car is behind or in front of me

This one is a judgement call for the driver to make. Rule 85 in the Highway Code states to signal “if necessary, before changing course or direction”.

On a motorway, what distance are the posts from one another that mark the nearest SOS telephone

The distance between the marker posts on the motorway is 100 metres

I can’t just ‘trickle’ up to a junction with my foot on the clutch, without the brake as well. Do you have any tips on how I can be more efficient stopping at junctions

The secret, on a level road, is to establish clutch control just short of the give way line and to then use clutch control to move forward, like on the turn in the road, for example. If you are finding that difficult, you might not be braking early enough.

What are the current guidelines for approaching a junction/roundabout? Is it necessary to go into first gear.

The correct gear to deal with a junction or roundabout will depend on the correct speed, and the correct speed will depend on the situation.
So, a junction or a roundabout with a very closed field of view or with lots of vehicles to give way to will require a very slow approach speed and first gear may appropriate. On the other hand, a junction or a roundabout with a very open field of view showing a clear road can be taken at greater speed and second or even third gear may be appropriate.
On the approach to a junction follow the ‘mirror–signal–position–speed–look–assess–decide–act’ routine as set out in ‘Driving, the essential skills’ by the DSA, as well as the advice above.

How many lessons are needed on average before starting manoeuvres, i.e. reversing, three-point turn, etc

Different instructors will begin teaching manoeuvres at different times. Some will begin to teach maneuvering as soon as the opportunity presents itself, for example to find somewhere to park at the end of the lesson or if taking a wrong turn into a cul-de-sac. Other instructors prefer to have their pupils master the art of driving forwards before they introduce them to driving backwards.

If I am driving past a parked car do i have to indicate if there are no other moving vehicles around?

No you do not need to indicate. Just make sure that you take up and maintain your road position in good time.
